Merced Police Investigating
Two Animal Cruelty Cases Involving Dogs
The Merced Police Department is actively
investigating two separate incidents of animal cruelty
involving dogs injured by firearms in unrelated cases
occurring in different areas of the city.
On February 3, 2025,
officers responded to a call regarding an injured
dog near Denise Drive. Upon arrival,
Merced Police officers and Animal Control located
a small Chihuahua suffering from a serious eye injury.
Veterinarians later confirmed that the injury was
caused by a pellet lodged in the dog’s eye,
fired from a pellet rifle.
The animal was transported to a veterinary facility
for urgent care. The Chihuahua
survived the injury and is recovering.
Two days later, on February
5, 2025, officers and Animal Control were
dispatched to the area of Loughborough Drive
and M Street after receiving a report of
a dog with a head injury. Responding personnel located
a Great Pyrenees with a gunshot wound to its head.
The dog was also taken to a veterinarian for emergency
medical attention. The Great Pyrenees also
survived and is continuing to recover.
Investigators believe these two cases
are not related and occurred on opposite
sides of the city. The Merced Police Department
is urging the community to come forward with any information
that may aid in identifying those responsible for
these acts of cruelty.
In support of this investigation, the
Merced Realtors Association has generously
donated $1,000 for information leading
to the arrest and/or conviction of
the person(s) responsible.
The Merced Police Department is committed
to ensuring the safety of all members of our community,
including our animals, and we are asking for the public’s
help.
If you have any information regarding
these incidents, please contact the Merced Police
Department Investigations Division at 209-769-6742
or tip line (209) 385-4725. Merced PD and the Merced
County District Attorney’s Office are committed
